Caring for the Nutritional Needs of the Cancer Patient and the Carer

  by Lorraine Kember

Caring for a seriously ill loved one is not something we actively prepare for, yet most of us at some time in our lives will find ourselves as primary carer to a parent, a spouse or one of our children.

When we are caring for someone else - it is natural for us to focus our attention solely on providing for them, the best physical, emotional and nutritional support available. In doing so, it is easy for us to lose sight of the needs of our own body and as a result, our health can suffer.

It is not unusual for a carer to closely monitor the patients diet, making sure they are receiving necessary nutrients, either by food or supplements ? whilst at the same time, completing neglecting to monitor their own diet to determine if they are receiving the nutrients they need to keep them well and to help them cope with their emotions, particularly if they are caring for a terminally ill loved one.

As carer?s we need to understand; that as well as caring for the patient, we must also care for ourselves, by monitoring our own diet and supplying the essential nutrients we need to guard against disease and remain physically and mentally strong enough to continue caring for our loved ones.

What can we do to ensure that both our loved ones and ourselves are getting the essential nutrients we need? The answer lies in Fruit and vegetables and the amount of each we consume each day.

One apple and a serving of potatoes with beans on the side - does not supply anywhere near the amount of essential nutrients our bodies require. Nutritionists have been telling us for years that we need to consume a minimum of 2 fruits and 5 vegetables daily for optimum health.

Despite knowing this, for one reason or another most of us do not have any where near the required amount.

Sometimes it is just too hard to shop for, prepare and eat the variety of fruit and vegetables we need. This, the rising price of fresh produce and the fact that it spoils easily makes it easy for us to put it in the too hard basket.

The fact remains however, that if we wish to provide quality of life for our seriously ill loved ones and ensure that our lives too have quality ? WE NEED NUTRIENTS.

So what can we do about it? The answer is ? Take Supplements - TAKE JUICE PLUS+?
